DEVELOPMENT OF WOMEN'S ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN KAZAKHSTAN, 2021. COCA-COLA KAZAKHSTAN

A CATI survey of rural women (1,078 respondents) over 18 years of age in 14 regions of Kazakhstan. Random selection based on telephone number lists.

Objectives: to measure the level of concerns, motivation and readiness for entrepreneurship among rural women; to identify the main problems and barriers to entrepreneurship in specific regions; to determine the needs for forms of support, as well as the preferences of the rural women's community regarding methods of working with donors or associations.

A survey of a thousand rural women in Kazakhstan, conducted by the Sange center (commissioned by Coca-Cola LLP), showed that 30.6% of them are already engaged in small businesses. Moreover, the additional potential of women's rural entrepreneurship is estimated at another 31.6%, of which 11.2% intend to start a business in the next 3 years, and 20.4% in the indefinite future.

GENDER FACTORS IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP. UN Women's Action Plan for GENDER EQUALITY and Empowerment, 2019–2020.

The purpose of this study was to identify barriers to the development of women's entrepreneurship in the country.

The study covered the North Kazakhstan region, Aktobe and Zhambyl regions, and the cities of Astana and Almaty.

In order to identify the difficulties and obstacles that women face when creating and running a business, their causes, and formulate specific proposals for their elimination, 6 focus group discussions (FGD) were conducted as part of the study. In addition, 20 in-depth interviews were conducted to obtain proposals for amendments and additions to regulatory legal acts, state plans and programs, and territorial development programs, 12 of which were conducted at the national level.

According to the World Bank's methodology for conducting an enterprise survey (ES) to assess the level of entrepreneurship in countries around the world, for countries such as Kazakhstan (a country with a medium-sized economy), a sample of 1,000 enterprises for the entire country as a whole allows us to obtain data with a 90% confidence level with an industry-specific error of 7.5%. As part of the study, 1,373 respondents were interviewed: 1,018 entrepreneurs, 355 self-employed individuals in 5 regions of Kazakhstan.

As part of the project, we developed recommendations and analytical materials to improve the methodology and tools for working with gender statistics. Our work included:

  • Development of approaches and recommendations for improving information systems and platforms.
  • Proposing mechanisms to enhance the perception and dissemination of statistical data through the use of graphic materials and infographics.
  • Conducting training for specialists working with gender statistics, aimed at improving their qualifications.
  • Preparing analytical articles for the website that promote a deeper understanding of gender issues.

Our efforts have laid the foundation for the development of effective gender policy and monitoring progress towards gender equality in Kazakhstan, based on high-quality and accessible statistical data.
